CityView, December 2020: Assisted Living and Memory Care in Los Angeles

by CityView Staff

We want to wish you a wonderful holiday season and may God’s grace continue to be upon us. Christmas allows us to pause and reflect on the important things around us- a time when we can look back on the year that has passed and prepare for the year ahead. The holidays can be so meaningful if you know that someone who loves you, and is planning something special with you in mind.

Our activity directors Arnold and Natalie have a lot of holiday cheer planned, from classic music to decorating to movies and baking. As we near the new year of 2021, we will leave you with a classic toast from Benjamin Franklin to ring in the New Year: “Be at war with your vices, at peace with your neighbors, and let every New Year find you a better man.” ~ Benjamin Franklin, “Poor Richard's Almanac,” 1755

CityView, December 2020: Assisted Living and Memory Care in Los Angeles

We are happy to introduce you to Dan R., our City View Resident of the Month this December!

Dan was born in Chicago, Illinois, and grew up in a big family. He was one of four children, with two brothers and a sister. He attended Riverside City College, where he studied Business. He went on to spend fifteen years working in Security, before transitioning to a career in

Bookkeeping for Hotels and Motels for the next twelve years. Alongside his regular work, he had a passion project: a business of his own where he helped people find jobs!

In his free time, Dan has always enjoyed reading, especially motivating self-help books. Some of his favorite sayings that he retains as practical philosophy come from biblical text: “As a man thinketh in his heart, so is he; As he continues to think, so he remains” and “Love thy neighbor as thyself.”

A fun, slightly macabre fact about Dan is that in 1965 he was read his Last Rites, but he survived and is still here today to tell his story all these years later! We’re glad we are able to have you here with us at City View, Dan, and look forward to getting to know you better!

At CityView, the holiday seasons remind us that our community is our resident’s home.

Our mission is to provide next-level assisted living support and forward-thinking memory care therapies, but it’s also to build an environment that is like home for our residents. Part of that is finding a way to savor special occasions, make each holiday feel like a proper celebration, and truly live in a way that feels rich and rewarding. We’re looking forward to doing all of that this December.

Evening of December 10 - Hanukkah

This year, Hanukkah 2020 begins the evening of Thursday, December 10th and ends the evening of Friday, December 18th. Hannukah is the Jewish eight-day, wintertime “festival of lights,” celebrated with a nightly menorah lighting, special prayers and fried foods. The Hebrew word Chanukah means “dedication,” and is thus named because it celebrates the rededication of the Holy Temple. At the heart of the festival is the nightly menorah lighting. The menorah holds nine flames, one of which is the shamash (“attendant”), which is used to kindle the other eight lights. On the first night, we light just one flame. On the second night, an additional flame is lit. By the eighth night of Chanukah, all eight lights are kindled. These upcoming Hanukkah evenings we look forward to reciting the special blessings before the menorah is lit, singing traditional songs afterward, and enjoying sufganiyot (jelly doughnuts) and latkes (potato pancakes)!

December 24 - Christmas Eve Eggnog Soiree at 11:00 a.m.

You either love it or you hate it, but eggnog is synonymous with the December holidays! Eggnog is a sweetened dairy-based beverage traditionally made with milk and cream, sugar, whipped eggs, and spices. When served at parties and holiday get-togethers, liquor is often added to the eggnog, such as brandy or rum, and then garnished with a sprinkle of cinnamon. Since

our Christmas Eve Eggnog Soiree will be taking place at 11:00am in the morning, we will be forgoing the liquor. However, we are sure to have a cheerful time with friends drinking delicious eggnog, listening to holiday tunes, and sharing Christmas Eve memories!

December 25 - Christmas

Every year on December 25th, we celebrate Christmas, a day for spending time with family, observing an important Christian holiday, partaking in lighthearted traditions, or just spreading some holiday cheer! Christmas has evolved over several millennia into a worldwide celebration that’s both religious and secular and chock full of fun-filled, family activities. Traditionally, Christians celebrate Christmas as the day on which Jesus Christ, the son of God, was born. Secularly, it is a great time of holiday music, caroling, traditions of Santa Claus delivering presents, gift exchanges, and so much more. This Christmas season we look forward to decorating holiday desserts, singing Christmas carols and watching classic Christmas movies, making cards and homemade gifts for one another, and spreading that holiday cheer!

Employee of the Month - Lilian Manapat

Congratulations to Lilian on all her hard work and dedication as a caregiver to City View residents; we are happy that you have been recognized as our Employee of the Month! Lilian loves her job because it is fulfilling to help and care for others; she thinks of the residents as family, and treats them as she would want her family to be treated. Speaking of family, Lilian is happily married to her husband Joey, and proud of her four grown up children. Her three sons and beautiful daughter have all graduated from college and are pursuing careers and families of their own. She loves spending time with her family, especially her three grandchildren, whether at the beach or a buffet restaurant!

Lilian grew up in the Philippines, and went on to college to achieve her Bachelor of Science in Business Administration, with her Major in Accounting. After graduating, she worked as an administrative officer in a government office in the Philippines for thirteen years. Then she went and worked in Vienna, Austria as a caregiver for eight years. Finally, she decided to move with her family to the U.S. in 2011 with the approved immigrant visa petition, since her brother is a U.S. citizen. Lilian never dreamed about success, she worked for it. To make a difference in someone’s life, she says you do not have to be brilliant, rich, beautiful, or perfect - you just have to care. We are so grateful at City View to have Lilian’s expertise and caring attitude! Thank you. Lilian, for making a difference every day and being so inspirational!
